Death Stranding 2: On the Beach — Release Date, Editions, and My Favorite Octopus-Filled BB Tank

I’ve carried a baby in a pod across a rain-soaked wasteland, so I like to think I know weird when I see it. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, however, took weird out back and gave it a laser guitar and a robot army. After years of teasers that felt like experimental art films, Kojima Productions finally dropped Sam Porter Bridges back onto PlayStation 5 on June 26, 2025. Now that 2026 is here, the game has been out on console long enough for me to have developed several unhinged theories about octopuses, tar, and why nobody can just have a normal delivery job.

So, when exactly did Death Stranding 2 come out?

The official Death Stranding 2 release date was June 26, 2025, confirmed in that March 2025 pre-order trailer. True to form, it launched exclusively on PlayStation 5, leaving PC players like me to stare mournfully at the horizon. Hideo Kojima had already hinted on his Hideraji Infinity radio show that the game was on course for mid-2025 after wrapping its year-long adjustment phase. Considering the final date stuck the landing, I like to think even the tar didn't cause a delay.

As for PC, the first Death Stranding took about eight months to make the jump, so as 2026 rolls on, the PC port is either tapping at my Steam window or already settling into my library like a well-worn pair of porter boots. Don't expect it on Game Pass, though; this is one delivery that seems destined for Steam, possibly as a Director's Cut special edition down the line.

There are three editions, and none of them come with a physical disc, which is the kind of bold anti-cargo energy I respect.

Even the Collector's Edition doesn't include a physical copy, which feels like Kojima winking at us from inside a chiral network.

Pre-orders went live at 10am local time on March 17, 2025. If you jumped in early, you got:

The reveal trailer: babies, bunkers, and a suspicious octopus

The first trailer opens with Fragile and baby Lou inside an underground bunker. Little Lou is about two now, looking happy and healthy, which would be comforting if the camera didn't pan to an Amelie figurine near a coffin. Then bullets fly. Fragile escapes on a motor-driven unicycle, gets shot, and we get a quick flash of a BB entity inside a human body before a BB tank appears surrounded by cryptobiotes. Later, Sam shows up to admire Fragile's new mech-ship, and after the credits, a masked figure strums a guitar while a BB tank houses an octopus instead of a baby. I have questions. Mostly about the octopus.

On the Beach: George Miller, Higgs, and more unanswered questions

On January 31, Kojima Productions dropped a nearly ten-minute trailer and revealed the subtitle On the Beach. It opens with Fragile and an unknown man played by George Miller operating on a tar-affected body. A BT-cat with an octopus tongue licks tar, the body has octopus marks, and a drop of tar hits Fragile's skin, causing timefall effects. Then the body wakes up, because of course it does.

We also get a tour of the DHV Magellan, learn that Fragile founded Drawbridge with an anonymous patron, and see Sam explore deserts, rocks, and cities on an epic motorcycle and quad bike. A tiny talking puppet joins him, and Sam's hair is brown again — earlier trailers showed it white, which means time reversal or an extremely effective hair dye.

Then Higgs shows up with a laser guitar and a robot army. Sam asks if Higgs killed Lou, and Higgs replies that Sam 'still doesn't know.' Later, Elle Fanning's character watches from the shadows, bound by white puppet strings and wearing the same arm wrap as the body on the operating table. If she isn't Lou, I will eat my BB tank.

Neil, Lucy, and the most confusing slap in gaming

At Summer Game Fest, Kojima Productions shared a full cutscene with Neil and Lucy. Neil is another porter, Lucy asks if he made it, and they both have identical cancer marks on their hands. Neil says 'The girl… you're alive,' Lucy slaps him, then attacks him, then they hug. Kojima said Neil plays a role similar to Mads Mikkelsen's Cliff, so expect more emotional whiplash.

Gameplay, photo mode, and Tomorrow's big moment

At the LA premiere on June 8, we saw Tomorrow freed from a chrysalis, a conversation about childbirth with pregnant Rainy, and a full rendition of 'Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head.' In gameplay, Tomorrow disintegrates robots in a white dress, then turns her hair and dress black and gold marks appear around her eyes. Sam can only stammer thanks.

At TGS 2024, Kojima Productions also showed off a delightfully unhinged photo mode where Fragile poses and dances with Tomorrow and Rainy. Yes, I spent more time there than in actual combat.

Development and pandemic rewrites

Kojima revealed that filming and recording wrapped around May 2024, after which the game entered its adjustment phase. He also said the entire story was rewritten following the coronavirus pandemic, which makes sense for a series about connection. In 2026, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach stands as one of the most wonderfully strange action-adventure games I've ever played, and I still have no idea what the octopus means.
