Death Stranding 2's Pac-Man Pizza Minigame Is Peak Kojima Absurdity

Death Stranding 2's Pac-Man minigame turns Pizza Chef Mamoru Oshii's pizza into ghost-eating strategic fun.

Okay, I have a confession: in 2026, I am still not over the fact that Death Stranding 2 turned a pizza chef into a gateway to Pac-Man. I was supposed to be delivering cargo across a haunted, post-apocalyptic not-America, and instead I found myself sweating over a neon maze while ghostly BTs lined up like they were waiting for a table at a retro arcade. And honestly? I loved every second of it.

The Unlock That Made Me Question Pizza

During the Death Stranding World Strand Tour 2 in Tokyo live showcase, Hideo Kojima and Mamoru Oshii showed off the Pac-Man minigame hidden inside the game. I say hidden, but it is less hidden and more lovingly stuffed into a pizza box and handed to you by a legend. The Pizza Chef prepper is based on Mamoru Oshii himself, the director behind Ghost in the Shell and Urusei Yatsura. So yes, in this game, you can hang out with an anime and sci-fi icon who apparently moonlights as a post-apocalyptic pizza artisan.

You unlock the minigame after reaching The Pizza Chef and spending time with him during the main campaign. In the showcase, Sam is chilling at the chef's place when a pizza shaped like the Bandai Namco icon appears. Sam eats a slice. The classic Pac-Man sound effects kick in, and his Ring Terminal suddenly shows Pac-Man and Ready icons. That is the moment my brain went, 'Ah yes, the natural progression of strand-type gameplay: wakawaka.'

Why Pac-Man in Death Stranding 2 Works

Here is the beautiful part: the minigame is not just a cute distraction. Eating BTs in Pac-Man eliminates them on the map. Let me repeat that. You can play Pac-Man, chomp ghosts, and then those same ghosts are gone from the actual world. That is the most Kojima thing I have ever typed. Bandai Namco actually allowed this crossover as part of Pac-Man's 45th anniversary celebration, and I want to shake the hand of every lawyer and producer who said yes.

What I expected What I got
A normal prepper Mamoru Oshii in a pizza bunker
A snack break A Bandai Namco icon pizza
A cute mini-game Ghost-clearing Pac-Man with strategic consequences
A break from BTs BTs as edible power pellets
A serious sci-fi story Wakawaka as a weapon of mass delivery

I have played a lot of weird games in 2026. I have crafted, survived, and delivered packages through more apocalypses than I can count. But there is something special about sitting in a bunker, eating a pizza that looks like a corporate mascot, and then using a vintage arcade game to delete supernatural threats from the map. It is absurd. It is silly. It is also deeply, unmistakably Death Stranding.

More Than Just a Minigame

The Tokyo showcase did not stop at pizza and ghosts. Hololive Vtuber Usada Pekora also appeared, announcing a Holo no Graffiti episode that references the game. If you are keeping score, Death Stranding 2 now has Mamoru Oshii, Pac-Man, and a Vtuber rabbit in the same cultural orbit. Gen Hoshino, who appears as a prepper and contributed music to the soundtrack, showed up after that. At this point, I am half expecting my local pizza delivery guy to be a secret prepper with a synthesizer and a cameo in the next trailer.

What I love about this whole thing is how it refuses to stay in one lane. Death Stranding 2 is a game about isolation, connection, and carrying heavy boxes up hills that seem personally offended by your knees. It is also a game where you can eat a Pac-Man pizza and then play Pac-Man to erase BTs. That tonal whiplash should not work. Yet somehow, under Kojima's watch, it does. The minigame is not bolted on for a cheap laugh. It is a reward, a joke, a gameplay mechanic, and a 45th anniversary party all at once.

The 45th Anniversary Blessing

Pac-Man turning 45 is already enough to make me feel ancient. I remember when a yellow circle eating dots was the pinnacle of interactive entertainment, and now that same yellow circle is helping me clear a ghost-infested map in a game starring Norman Reedus and a baby in a pod. We have come so far. We have also come to a place where Bandai Namco and Kojima Productions can collaborate on something this wonderfully strange.

If you have not reached The Pizza Chef yet in Death Stranding 2, do it. Spend time with him. Eat the pizza. Play the Pac-Man. Eliminate some BTs. Then go back to delivering cargo like nothing happened, even though everything happened. As of 2026, Death Stranding 2 is available for the PS5, and this minigame remains one of the best reasons to take a break from saving the world. Just do not ask me to explain the lore of a pizza that unlocks an arcade cabinet. I am still working on that one.
