Death Stranding Isolations Anime Series Announced for Disney+ in 2027
Death Stranding Isolations, a hand-drawn 2D anime from Kojima Productions, hits Disney+ in 2027, following isolated outsiders in Sam Bridges' world.
Fans of Hideo Kojima’s atmospheric delivery saga are getting another animated entry in the expanding universe. During a presentation at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Kojima Productions and series director Takayuki Sano announced that a new anime series, Death Stranding Isolations, is coming to Disney+ in 2027. The project will use traditional hand-drawn 2D animation, a notable choice that separates it from the more common CGI approaches in modern anime and game adaptations.

The announcement included concept art from Ilya Kuvshinov, the character designer behind Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. The art offers a first look at the two leading characters and immediately sets a somber, expressive tone. E&H production will handle the animation, while Takayuki Sano is on board as the series director. Kuvshinov’s involvement suggests a style that blends delicate linework with emotional close-ups, which could fit the lonely, rain-soaked world of Death Stranding.
The decision to use hand-drawn animation may help the series capture the painterly qualities of the games. Death Stranding is known for wide shots of desolate landscapes, subtle facial expressions, and long stretches of quiet travel. Traditional 2D animation can emphasize those emotional beats in a way that CGI sometimes struggles to match. With E&H production involved and Kuvshinov’s character art setting the visual direction, the series could lean toward a more intimate, character-driven approach.
Although the show stands alone from the games, its synopsis confirms that it exists in the same timeline as Sam Bridges’ journey across America. The official description introduces a cast of outsiders who are each dealing with isolation in their own way. There is an old man searching for salvation outside the connections promoted by Bridges, a female warrior trying to create a world of constant fighting, a boy with a grudge against Bridges, and a girl who embraces loneliness. As humanity and the world face possible collapse, their fates and hopes converge, beginning another story in the Death Stranding universe.
By referencing Sam Bridges directly, the series positions itself as a parallel story rather than a direct sequel or prequel. That approach could give longtime players a familiar anchor while allowing new viewers to enter without deep knowledge of the games. The focus on isolation also mirrors the thematic core of the franchise, where connection and disconnection are central conflicts. Death Stranding Isolations is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2027.
The Larger Death Stranding Roadmap
Kojima Productions has been expanding the franchise across multiple media. Earlier, the studio shared a trailer for an anime movie titled Death Stranding: Mosquito. That film will be directed by ABC Animation Studio’s Hiroshi Miyamoto, with a script by Aaron Guzikowski. No release window has been announced for Mosquito.
Beyond animation, a live-action Death Stranding movie is also in the works. Kojima was asked to direct the film himself, but he declined. Instead, Michael Sarnoski is set to direct, and A24 is producing. Meanwhile, the video game side remains active: Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was released earlier this year, continuing the main story with Sam Bridges.

With three distinct screen adaptations now in various stages of development, the Death Stranding brand is moving well beyond its PlayStation origins. Each project appears to take a different path: Isolations embraces traditional 2D anime, Mosquito is an anime film with its own creative team, and the live-action movie brings the material to a new audience through A24’s independent cinema lens.
Here is a quick overview of the announced projects:
| Project | Format | Key Creative Team | Release |
|---|---|---|---|
| Death Stranding Isolations | Anime series | Takayuki Sano, E&H production, Ilya Kuvshinov | Disney+ in 2027 |

The announcement strengthens Disney+ as a destination for ambitious anime-inspired storytelling and gives Kojima fans another reason to look ahead. For now, the first concept art and the synopsis are enough to spark speculation about how these isolated characters will cross paths with the wider world of Bridges.
